I want my students to become self learners, rational thinkers, creative artists and I use Math education as a tool for this training.
At Maths2art, I proudly train my students for self-study and this imbibes values such as integrity, perseverance and resilience in them. For the parents who ask me, “How do you train your students for self-study?” – this is how a usual session @Maths2Art looks like :
Whenever we start a new topic, I brief the students about that topic. This is the common discussion for any topic:
Why was this concept discovered/ invented?
How did it help human society at that time?
How is it helping human society now?
Thought process behind the discovery/invention.
I talk to them about the Philosophy, History and Geography of the topic, it’s connection to other topics, etc. But, I don’t teach them how to solve questions from that topic.
My students know that they have to learn it themselves.
Students get to use the ‘solved examples’ to decode what is happening and why it is happening so. I help them by giving minimum clues in their discovery of ‘why’s’ and ‘how’s’.
At Maths2art, students learn to think.
I encourage them to come up with some of their own ways to solve the same problem. If their alternate method works well, they feel elated. Even if the method doesn’t work, what they learn in that process is incomparable.
There are no spoon feeders in real life. We proudly train our students for ‘self study’.
At Maths2Art, students learn ‘How to learn’ !
Math is not to be accepted. It is to be understood.
